25 years ago: It was the summer of 1993.
Jurassic Park was the blockbuster movie. The very first Chipotle opened on Evans Avenue in Denver. And the Colorado Rockies played their first season at Mile High Stadium.
But we remember 1993 for something else: That was the year that Cyndi Kahn led efforts to put together a half-day summer literacy program for 20 young students at Hallett Elementary School. The success of that program spurred the creation of Summer Scholars.
In 1994, Summer Scholars served 511 students in a full-day program. In 1998, we added after-school programming.
And in 25 years of service to the community, we have served approximately 30,000 students.
Now that’s a reason to celebrate!
